Krateo S.r.l. participated in the ICSC for Startup (I4S) program with the project “Sustainable FinOps”, developed between April 2025 and April 2026 under the technical leadership of Diego Braga, CTO of Krateo.
The Project
The goal of the project was to develop and expand the Krateo Composable FinOps module — part of the Krateo PlatformOps ecosystem — to collect cost and usage metrics from multiple cloud providers and present them in a unified, optimized view. Beyond financial data, the system captures resource utilization indicators (CPU, memory) and environmental sustainability metrics such as carbon intensity, ingesting data in FOCUS format for efficient storage and temporal analysis.
The project had three core objectives: collecting FinOps metrics including costs, pricing, and utilization; developing optimization algorithms to reduce cloud spend; and improving the efficiency and sustainability of existing and future cloud infrastructure.
Results
The project was completed successfully, with all planned objectives achieved. Some aspects evolved from the original plan in response to market demand. Key deliverables include:
- Azure VM FinOps: cost and utilization metric collection from Azure with fully integrated showback in the Krateo portal, and automatic day/night cycle detection via Open Policy Agent (OPA)
- Multi-cloud support (AWS): extension of the architecture to AWS through a generic data collection system based on JQ expressions, enabling data normalization across any cloud provider
- KServe Controller and Krateo Predictor: replacing the originally planned MLFlow integration, a KServe controller was developed for declarative inference operations on Kubernetes, alongside an example application for resource prediction and scheduling in Slurm clusters
- Azure Compute Optimization Toolkit: a toolkit for predictive optimization of cloud virtual machines
- Portal FinOps Dashboard: a unified dashboard for visualizing cost and usage across the entire platform
- docs.krateo.io: a comprehensive public documentation hub covering all newly developed FinOps modules
All code is released as open source under the Apache 2.0 license.
Impact
The technologies developed through this project have already generated concrete commercial traction: one partner has signed a contract, with several others in active negotiations. On the sustainability front, the predictive rightsizing and optimization tools directly address large-scale cloud resource waste, delivering a measurable reduction in carbon emissions for our customers.
Krateo has also made ongoing investments in research in this space, funding a PhD position and establishing a collaboration with the University of Trento — two of whose interns have since been hired full-time.
